Elderberry Syrup

I had been hearing about Elderberry Syrup and it's uses for immune support so I checked out my friends blog to learn how to make it and we've been using it ever since.  Elderberries have been shown to support the immune system, support our bodies in its regulation of blood sugar, support a healthy heart, encourage healthy skin and so much more.

We currently take Inner Defense to support our immune system but there are times our bodies need an extra boost and that's where Elderberry Syrup comes in.

I like easy, period and Elderberry Syrup is another super simple recipe to help support our bodies when it needs it most. Plants have been used for centuries to 'cure what ails ya' and this is just one more

Elderberry, or elder, has been used for centuries to treat wounds, when applied to the skin. It is also taken by mouth to treat respiratory illnesses such as cold and flu.

Elderberry Syrup

3 ½ cups water

2/3 cup dried elderberries

1  tsp ground cinnamon powder

½ tsp ground clove powder (whole cloves can be used as well)

2 Tbsp fresh or dried ginger root (I have used both fresh and dried, either works)

1 cup raw local honey (local is important so you get the benefits of local pollination)

Add all ingredients EXCEPT honey, to a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for 45-60 minutes. It should be reduced by about half. Once reduced, remove from stove and strain to remove the berries.  Allow the mixture to cool for a bit, before adding the honey.  Mix well and pour into glass jar and put it in the fridge to cool completely.

Dosage amounts vary but hubby takes a shot every day and I take a shot as needed but you could also follow the Adults 1/2-1 tablespoon, youngins 1/2-1 teaspoon, taken once daily for maintenance or every couple hours if not feeling up to par

Store your Elderberry syrup in the fridge and it should last a few months.  Frozen as popsicles is a great way to use it too.
